About Coachella Valley History Museum
The Coachella Valley History Museum is run by the valley historical society, founded in 1965, and occupies about 2.4 hectares on Miles Avenue in downtown Indio. The buildings and gardens tell how the desert became an agricultural and travel region.
The centerpiece is the Smiley-Tyler House, an adobe home built in 1926 to serve as house and office for pioneer doctors in the valley. The rooms cover the Cahuilla people, the desert’s early inhabitants, the arrival of water and agriculture, and hold a collection of Mexican folk art, including textiles, ceramics and wooden toys.
Next to it is Indio’s 1909 schoolhouse, moved to the site, with original desks and slate blackboards. The date museum explains the arrival of the first palms to the California desert, how palms are planted and propagated, and why the valley became the fruit’s growing center.
The tour also passes a blacksmith shop, pioneers’ farm machinery and the Desert Submarine, one of the outdoor exhibits. Among the buildings are a Japanese garden, a rose garden and a memorial date palm garden.
