About Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary has been maintained by the National Audubon Society, a bird-protection organization, since the 1950s, when logging threatened the last large cypress trees in the region. It protects the largest old-growth bald cypress forest in North America, with trees over 500 years old and more than 30 meters high.

Visits are made via a wooden boardwalk of about 3.6 km that crosses grasslands, a pine woodland and the interior of the cypress swamp, with benches and observation points. It is common to see herons, ibises, owls, woodpeckers, turtles, alligators and, in some years, the wood stork, which nests there. The sanctuary is also known for ghost orchids, rare plants that sometimes bloom in summer.

In winter and spring, the dry season, animals concentrate in the remaining ponds and birdwatching is usually easier. In summer the swamp fills and there are more mosquitoes.
