About Southampton History Museum
The Southampton History Museum tells the village’s story from the arrival of English settlers in 1640 and their relationship with the Shinnecock people. The headquarters is the Rogers Mansion, built in 1843 by a whaling ship captain and later expanded when Southampton began receiving wealthy New York families in summer.
The house’s rooms display furniture, clothing and objects from the 19th and 20th centuries, and the exhibitions cover whaling, agriculture and the village’s transformation into a seaside resort. On the grounds are historic structures brought from other parts of the region, such as a schoolhouse and artisan shops.
The museum also cares for other historic houses in the village, such as the Halsey House from the 17th century, one of the oldest wooden houses in the state, open part of the year.
