About Parrish Art Museum

The Parrish Art Museum was founded in 1898 in Southampton by art collector Samuel Parrish. In 2012 it moved to a new building in Water Mill, the neighboring village, designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, the same firm behind the Tate Modern in London. The building is long and low, with a gabled roof inspired by the region’s agricultural sheds, and sits in the middle of an open field.

The collection focuses on artists who lived or worked on eastern Long Island from the 19th century to the present. There are works by William Merritt Chase, who ran an outdoor painting school in Shinnecock Hills; Fairfield Porter, whose family donated thousands of paintings and drawings; and 20th-century artists such as Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner and Roy Lichtenstein.

Temporary exhibitions change throughout the year, and the museum has film, music and lecture programs, especially in summer.
