About Montauk Point Lighthouse
Construction of the Montauk Point Lighthouse was authorized in 1792 by the United States Congress during George Washington’s administration, and the tower was built in 1796 by builder John McComb Jr. It is the oldest lighthouse in the state of New York and one of the oldest in the country still in operation.
The stone tower, painted white with a brown band, stands atop a cliff on the eastern tip of Long Island. Erosion has brought the sea closer to the lighthouse over the centuries, and stone walls were built to protect the cliff. It is 137 steps to the top, where you can see the meeting of the Atlantic and the Long Island Sound.
The keeper’s house, dating from 1860, houses a museum about the lighthouse’s history, the keepers and the shipwrecks in the area. The lighthouse is a national historic landmark and is located within Montauk Point State Park, with coastal trails.
