About Hither Hills State Park
Hither Hills State Park occupies a strip of land between the ocean and Napeague Bay, west of Montauk. On the Atlantic side it has a long beach of light sand, with lifeguards in summer and a much-sought campground with sites near the dunes.
On the bay side are the Walking Dunes, dunes that the wind slowly pushes over the woods at a rate of about one meter per year. A trail of about 1.6 km crosses the dunes and shows trees partially buried by sand and the tops of trees that emerge on the dune slopes.
The park also has trails through pine and oak woods, freshwater ponds and beach fishing areas.
