About Camp Hero State Park
Camp Hero was a military base established in World War II to defend Long Island’s coast against naval attacks. To avoid attracting attention from enemy planes and ships, the buildings were disguised as houses in a fishing-village style, with painted roofs and windows.
During the Cold War the base came under the Air Force, which installed a large surveillance radar there, with an antenna about 37 meters wide. The antenna remains in place and became the park’s landmark. The base was decommissioned in the 1980s and turned into a state park.
Trails run through the woods and along the cliffs, with views of the ocean and the lighthouse. Surf spots along the coast attract experienced surfers, and there are fishing sections. The military buildings are visible from the outside.
