About Historic Pensacola
Pensacola saw an early Spanish colony attempt in 1559 that was destroyed by a hurricane, and it was refounded at the end of the 17th century. Since then it passed through Spanish, French, British, Confederate and American control, which is why it is presented as the city of five flags.
Historic Pensacola, administered by the University of West Florida, brings together historic houses and museums in the Seville district near the bay. Among them are 19th‑century wooden houses with porches and gardens, and exhibits about colonial and 19th‑century city life. The T.T. Wentworth Jr. Florida State Museum, in a former 1907 city hall building, shows the region’s history.
The Pensacola Museum of History and Plaza Ferdinand VII, where Florida was handed over to the United States in 1821, are a few blocks away. The surrounding streets have restaurants and shops in historic buildings.
