The Panhandle is the narrow strip in northwest Florida between Alabama and Georgia, and its Gulf Coast is known as the Emerald Coast. The sand is almost pure quartz, very white and fine, that squeaks under your feet, and on calm days the sea has an emerald-green hue. The region’s climate differs from South Florida, with cool winters and hot summers.
Destin, in the middle of the coast, began as a fishing village and is one of the area’s most sought-after beach towns, with a busy fishing harbor, the sandbar of Crab Island and state parks with dunes. To the east, Scenic Highway 30A passes planned beach towns and Grayton Beach State Park.
Pensacola, at the far western end, has more than four centuries of history, with historic neighborhoods, 19th-century forts on Santa Rosa Island and the National Naval Aviation Museum at the naval air station where U.S. Navy pilots train and where the Blue Angels are based. Panama City Beach, in the east, has long beaches, a fishing pier and St. Andrews State Park, from where boats go to Shell Island.
High season runs from late spring through late summer, when schools are on break. Autumn still has warm water and fewer people.
This destination brings together 3 cities: Destin, Pensacola, Panama City Beach.
