About Shell Island
Shell Island is a narrow, long barrier island of about 11 km between St. Andrews Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. It has no roads, buildings or services, and most of it belongs to St. Andrews State Park and protected areas.
The beaches are white quartz sand with dunes, and on the bay side the water is calmer and shallower. The island is known for the shells that accumulate on its sand and for dolphins that often appear in the channel and nearby waters. Seabirds are common and, at certain times, sea turtle nests may be present.
The only access is by boat: vessels leave from the St. Andrews State Park pier and from local operators, and some people kayak or paddleboard across the channel, taking care with currents and boat traffic.
