About Trnava City Tower

The City Tower (Mestská veža) was built in 1574 by the local master Jakub as a watchtower from which fire and attack alarms were sounded. Fires in 1666 and 1683 left it roofless, and it was rebuilt in the Baroque period, when it received its current roof.

The tower has a square plan, is about 57 m high, and its facades are decorated with sgraffito in a diamond pattern. On the fifth floor there is a clock mechanism installed in 1729, and on the southwest side there is a sundial. Inside, the floors house an exhibition about the city’s history.

The panoramic gallery is about 29 m above the ground. From there you can see the church towers that gave the city the nickname Little Rome, Trinity Square with the theatre, and the Holy Trinity column.

On the ground floor is the tourist information centre, where tickets are sold. It is the city’s most visited stop and a good starting point for understanding the layout of the centre.
