About West Slovak Museum (Západoslovenské múzeum)
The Museum of Western Slovakia (Západoslovenské múzeum) occupies the former Poor Clares convent of Trnava, first mentioned in 1239 and built next to the city walls. The building has been altered over the centuries and preserves a sacristy with rich stucco decoration and reliefs.
The museum was founded in 1954 as a regional museum and today manages four buildings in the historic centre, three of them national cultural monuments. The collection exceeds 160,000 objects and covers archaeology, history, ethnography and natural sciences of the region. At a national level, the museum specialises in bells, brick production and invertebrates.
On the first floor of the main building there is an exhibition dedicated to the sculptor and medalist William Schiffer, who was born in Trnava. The ethnographic display shows costumes, household items and traditional crafts from the plain villages. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions and workshops.
A visit is a good way to complement the tour of the churches, providing context about everyday life in the town and the countryside.
