About Trnava City Walls
The Walls of Trnava (Mestské opevnenie) were erected at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, after the town received royal city privileges. Unlike many fortifications in the region, they were built mostly of brick, and much of the original ring still stands around the historic centre.
The complex originally included towers, bastions and gates. With the end of threats, the gates were demolished and part of the moat became gardens and streets, but the wall line still defines the edge of the old town.
The best way to see the walls is to walk along the outside, through the parks and streets that occupy the old moat. The most complete stretches are on the west and south sides of the centre, near the Museum of Western Slovakia and University Square. Along the route there is an interactive GPS game about the walls, designed for families.
