About Spa Island of Piešťany
The Spa Island (Kúpeľný ostrov) is the heart of Piešťany. Formed between two arms of the Váh River, it brings together the bathhouses, treatment hotels and the spa gardens. Thermal springs rise from about 2,000 m deep, at temperatures of 67 to 69 °C, and are used in pools, tubs and in the sulfurous mud baths, kept at about 39 °C.
The oldest building is the Napoleon spa, a neoclassical complex built between 1822 and 1862. The major expansion came after 1889, when the Winter family took over the spa: from that period are the Irma spa and its adjoining hotel, opened in 1912 in Art Nouveau style, and the Eva pool, as well as one of the region’s first golf courses in the north of the island.
For visitors not undergoing treatment, the island is a large park: avenues, lawns, flowerbeds and small squares among the historic buildings. Much of it can be skirted on foot or by bicycle and the river can be seen from both sides.
Access from the center is via the Colonnade Bridge on foot, or via the road bridge beside it.
