About Liptov Village Museum (Skanzen Pribylina)

The Liptov Village Museum (Múzeum liptovskej dediny) is near Pribylina, about 15 km east of Liptovský Mikuláš, with the Western Tatras in the background. It was created to save buildings from villages that disappeared under the Liptovská Mara reservoir, formed in the 1970s, and opened to the public in 1991.

The museum recreates a Liptov village: wooden peasant houses, workshops, barns and also manor houses of the lesser nobility, which sets it apart from other open-air museums. The oldest piece is the Gothic church brought from the village of Liptovská Mara, with wall paintings, where there is an exhibition of sacred sculptures. It is the most visited site of the Liptov Museum.

In summer there are guided tours and activities for children, such as an herb trail, a bear den and a viewpoint over the Tatras. Some Sundays feature festivals with music and traditional crafts. Next to the museum there is a small historic forest railway, visited with the same ticket.
