About Church of St. Nicholas
The Church of Saint Nicholas (Kostol svätého Mikuláša) is Liptovský Mikuláš’s oldest building and gave the town its name. Excavations have shown that around 1200 there was already a Romanesque church with a cemetery on the site. The present Gothic building was raised at the end of the 13th century, and a document from 1299 already mentions the temple with its tower.
In the 15th century the tower was rebuilt in late Gothic style and received, at the top, three storeys of large double stone windows that still define the square’s silhouette. The interior has undergone several renovations over the centuries, and the church remains in use by the Catholic parish.
The church closes the south side of Námestie osloboditeľov, the town’s central square, which concentrates the town hall, old houses and the pedestrian zone. It is the natural starting point for a walking tour of the centre before heading to the Demänová valley or Pribylina.
