About Demänová Cave of Liberty

The Demänová Freedom Cave (Demänovská jaskyňa slobody) lies on the right side of the Demänová valley. It was discovered in 1921 and opened to the public in 1924. It is part of Slovakia’s largest cave system, which includes more than 40 km of galleries, about 8 km of which belong to this cave.

The tour follows roughly 1.8 km of galleries, with stairs and several levels. The best-known spot is the Great Dome, about 41 meters high. Along the route you’ll see stalactites, stalagmites, stone cascades and very clear lakes formed by the Demänovka River, which flows through the mountain. Cave bear bones were found in one of the galleries.

The cave is managed by the Správa slovenských jaskýň, the state cave administration, and visits are always guided at fixed times. The entrance is at about 870 meters altitude, and access from the parking lot is a short uphill walk. There is an entrance fee; check the current price list.
