About Levoča Town Hall

The Old Town Hall of Levoča (Radnica) sits in the center of Master Paul Square, next to the Basilica of St. James. The current building was erected after the great fire of 1550 and is one of the main works of civil Renaissance architecture in Slovakia. The two‑storey arcades and the old bell tower beside it complete the ensemble.

The façade has allegorical paintings of civic virtues. Inside are rooms of the Spiš Museum, part of the Slovak National Museum, with displays about the town’s history, the guilds and the former administration of Spiš, including the council chamber.

In front of the town hall is the cage of shame (klietka hanby), a 16th‑century iron cage where people convicted of minor offenses were displayed for public humiliation. It is one of the square’s symbols.

Around it, the square is lined with merchants’ houses, many with Gothic cores. House number 20, with a shell‑motif façade, hosts the exhibition dedicated to Master Paul. The Thurzo House, with an sgrafitto façade, is another of the most photographed buildings.
