About Museum of Coins and Medals, Kremnica
The Museum of Coins and Medals (Múzeum mincí a medailí) is one of the oldest museums in Slovakia. It was founded in 1890 by the archivist Pavol Križko as a local history museum and began specialising in numismatics in 1976. Today it belongs to the National Bank of Slovakia and occupies a burgher house in late Gothic style on Kremnica’s main square.
The exhibition spreads across five floors and follows the history of money in the Slovak territory, from ancient coins to current banknotes, including the famous gold ducats of Kremnica. In the attic is the collection of medals, from the Renaissance to the present day, with works from the international medal symposium that the museum has organised since 1983.
The museum also shows the mining and minting techniques used in the town over the centuries, and visitors can try striking a coin by hand.
The visit complements the tour of the town castle, which is administered by the same museum.
