About Kremnica Town Castle
The Town Castle (Mestský hrad) of Kremnica occupies the rise above the square and was built between the 13th and 15th centuries to protect the administration of the mines and the mint. The town walls attach to the castle fortifications, and the whole complex is a national cultural monument.
In the centre of the castle stands the Church of St. Catherine, in late Gothic style, from the 15th century. It occupies the site of the former residence of the chamber count, the royal administrator of the mines, and its tower can be seen from almost the entire town. The church organ hosts a European organ festival every year.
The guided tour, conducted by the Museum of Coins and Medals, goes through the church, the walls, the castle’s former town hall with Baroque sculptures, the north tower with an exhibition about the town’s defence and archaeological research, and the bells of Kremnica. From the walls you can see the roofs of the square and the slopes where the gold mines were located.
