About Špania Dolina

Špania Dolina is a village in the Starohorské vrchy mountains, about 10 km north of Banská Bystrica. Copper from the area was mined since prehistoric times, with mining tools dated to 2000–1700 BCE, and in the Middle Ages and the following centuries the Špania Dolina mines sustained Banská Bystrica’s wealth and exported copper to many European countries. The village appears in a document from 1263, and the mines closed in 1888.

The cluster of miners’ houses, made of wood and stone and spread along the hillside, is protected as a folk architecture reserve, and dozens of buildings are cultural monuments. At the top of the village, a long covered stairway climbs to the Church of the Transfiguration, of Gothic origin, from the 13th century. Near the square is the Klopačka, the tower from which miners were summoned for shifts, now used as a restaurant and lodging.

After the mines closed, the village women turned to bobbin lace, and in 1883 a vocational school for the craft was opened there. Špania Dolina lace continues to be produced and sold.

An educational mining trail leaves from the square and passes the old spoil heaps, and in season, from May to September, it’s possible to cross a restored miners’ tunnel. A small copper museum, run by a local brotherhood, opens by arrangement.
