About Museum of the Slovak National Uprising
The Museum of the Slovak National Uprising (Múzeum Slovenského národného povstania) is dedicated to the antifascist uprising of 1944, which began in this town. The uprising was one of the largest antifascist resistance actions in Europe and, although militarily defeated within a few months, left a deep mark on the country’s memory; the date is a national holiday.
The building, inaugurated in 1969 and designed by the architect Dušan Kuzma, is both museum and monument, a concrete construction of unusual forms in a park near the center. The building became a reference of postwar architecture in the country.
The indoor exhibitions cover life in the country between 1938 and 1945, the resistance, the course of the uprising and its consequences, and also include the Holocaust in Slovakia. The collection of military objects is one of the largest in the country.
Outdoors, around the building, are tanks, cannons, vehicles and a World War II aircraft, which can be seen even without entering the museum. The museum organizes the national anniversary celebrations of the uprising every year.
