About Urban Castle of Banská Bystrica
The Urban Castle (Mestský hrad) of Banská Bystrica is not a noble’s castle but a complex of fortified buildings that protected the administration and the revenues of the town’s copper and silver mines. It occupies a rise just above SNP Square, surrounded by walls with three bastions, and the entrance is guarded by a barbican.
The oldest and largest building is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, of Romanesque and Gothic origin from the 13th century, with chapels and altars from various periods. Next to it is the Church of the Holy Cross, from 1452, also called the Slovak Church, and Matej’s House (Matejov dom), a late Gothic building from 1479 named after King Matthias Corvinus that today houses an exhibition of the Central Slovakia Museum.
The old town hall, also within the complex, is used by the Central Slovakia Gallery for exhibitions. The courtyard between the churches and the walls is a quiet space from which you can see the square and the clock tower.
The complex is a national cultural monument and one of the central pieces of heritage of the mining towns of Central Slovakia.
