About Ždiarsky Dom Museum

The Ždiarsky dom is a small museum housed in a traditional wooden house of Ždiar, created in 1971 by the village itself at the initiative of local residents. It shows how the Górale, the mountain people of the region, lived, with their architecture, furniture, utensils and traditional costumes.

The houses of Ždiar are built from timber logs, and the façades often have painted bands and ornaments between the joints in white, blue and red. They cluster around enclosed courtyards, with stable and barn in the same complex. The museum reproduces the interior of one of these houses, with the kitchen, bedroom and living room, and the visit is accompanied by explanations about everyday life in the mountains.

The display includes festive costumes, embroidery and objects associated with the village’s celebrations. The museum offers visitors the chance to wear the local costume for photos and, on some occasions, stages a traditional Ždiar wedding.

The surrounding village is part of the visit: the main street and the Blaščatská dolina neighbourhood preserve several decorated houses, many converted into guesthouses, with views of the limestone walls of the Belianske Tatras.
