About Tatra National Park Museum

The Tatra National Park Museum (Múzeum TANAP-u) is in Tatranská Lomnica and was founded in 1957, eight years after the park’s creation. It’s a good introduction for first-time visitors to the Tatras: the rooms explain how the mountains were formed, which animals and plants live at each altitude band, and how the park is protected.

The exhibition is divided into sections on natural history, nature conservation, history and ethnography. The historical section tells how the Tatras were opened to visitors, from the first explorers and hunters to health resorts and marked trails. The ethnographic part shows the life of the villages at the foot of the mountains. The museum also screens films and hosts temporary exhibitions.

On the northeastern edge of the settlement is the Tatra Nature Exhibition, a botanical garden of about 3.2 hectares with around 270 mountain plant species organized by habitat. The garden has step-free paths, a small geological area and a memorial to those who defended the park’s creation.

The botanical garden is generally open from May to mid-September, when the plants can be seen even while higher areas are still snowy.
