About Lomnický štít

Lomnický štít, at 2,634 meters, is the second highest peak in Slovakia, second only to Gerlachovský štít. For a long time, before more precise measurements, it was considered the highest of the Tatras. Its rock pyramid dominates the landscape of Tatranská Lomnica and the Poprad valley.

The summit is reached by cable car, which makes Lomnický štít the highest point in Slovakia accessible without climbing. From Tatranská Lomnica, a gondola line with a change at the Štart station rises to Skalnaté pleso, at about 1,750 meters. From there, a small cabin carrying about 15 people makes the final stretch to the top, and therefore the ascent works with timed tickets and limited time at the summit.

At the top there are a meteorological and research observatory, a viewing terrace and a café. With clear skies, the view reaches much of the massif, the valleys on the Polish side and, to the south, the Spiš plains and the Low Tatras. The temperature at the summit is usually several degrees lower than in Tatranská Lomnica, even in July.

The ascent can be suspended due to strong wind, clouds or storms, and the peak is often covered. Ascending on foot to the summit is not permitted for ordinary visitors without a mountain guide.

How much time to set aside

Half a day, counting the two cable-car stages, time at the summit and the stop at Skalnaté pleso.

Best time

Early in the morning, when clouds are usually lower than the peak. From July to September there are more days with clear skies, but also afternoon thunderstorms. Check the forecast and the cable-car status for the day.

How to get there

By cable car: gondola from Tatranská Lomnica to Skalnaté pleso and cabin from Skalnaté pleso to the summit. The lower station is a few minutes on foot from Tatranská Lomnica train station.

Tip

Buy the final-leg ticket in advance, because the cabin holds few people and time slots sell out. Bring a warm jacket and sunscreen even in summer.
