About Hrebienok
Hrebienok is a plateau on the southern slope of the High Tatras, at about 1,285 meters altitude, just above Starý Smokovec. The name comes from the small ridge where it sits. From there you can see the Poprad valley and, to the north, the entrances to the Studený potok valleys, which climb toward the center of the massif.
The most used access is the funicular (pozemná lanovka), which departs from Starý Smokovec, near the train station, and climbs in a few minutes through the forested slope. The line opened in the early 20th century and was rebuilt later, now with modern cars. Hikers who prefer to walk climb by the forest trail, in about 50 minutes.
At the top are the Bilíkova chata refuge, a viewpoint and the meeting point of several marked trails. The most popular trail descends to the Studený potok valley and leads to the waterfalls in about 30 minutes. Others continue to the refuges in the high valleys, such as Zamkovského chata and Téryho chata, and to Skalnaté pleso via the Magistrála.
In winter, Hrebienok has short slopes for beginners and sledding, and the trail to the waterfalls remains open, with snow. Higher routes, beyond the refuges, only reopen around mid-June.
