About Spišská Sobota
Spišská Sobota is about 2 km northeast of Poprad’s center and was an independent town until the 20th century, when it became part of the municipality. Its name comes from the weekly Saturday market (sobota in Slovak). The town was among the Spiš towns pawned by the King of Hungary to Poland in 1412, a situation that lasted until 1772.
The historic core is organized around an elongated square, lined with merchant houses from the 16th and 17th centuries, with Renaissance facades, gables and stone portals. In the middle of the square are the Church of Saint George, the old town hall and a Baroque column. The ensemble is protected as an urban heritage reserve and has little car traffic.
The Church of Saint George, of Gothic origin, houses a carved wooden altarpiece from the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča from the early 16th century, the same sculptor of the great altar in Levoča. The adjacent tower and the church form the central point of the square. Some houses host exhibitions of the regional museum.
The quarter is quiet and residential, with guesthouses and cafés in old houses, and serves as an alternative to Poprad’s modern center for those who want a quiet place to sleep.
