About Cathedral of the Divine Holy Spirit

Barretos grew up around a chapel. In 1854, descendants of Francisco José Barreto and relatives of Simão Librina donated land to the Divine Holy Spirit for the construction of the chapel that gave rise to the town.

The Cathedral of the Divine Holy Spirit is the successor to that chapel and the main temple of Barretos. It stands in the center, in front of the square named after the founder.

The interior draws attention for its decorated arches and colorful stained glass. Near the cathedral is the Marco Zero of the town, a relief mural featuring the Barreto family, the Divine Holy Spirit and the municipal coat of arms.

The deed of donation was executed on August 25, 1854, a date adopted as Barretos’s founding day.
