About Visovac Island
Visovac is an oval island, about 170 by 120 meters, in the stretch where the Krka River widens like a lake, between Skradinski buk and Roški slap. It is part of Krka National Park and is surrounded by rocky slopes and vegetation.
Augustinians built a first complex there in the 14th century, and Franciscans settled on the island in 1445, expanding the monastery. The complex includes a church, cloister and a collection that features a library with manuscripts and rare books, among them an edition of Aesop’s fables printed in Brescia in 1487.
The visit to the island is short and accompanied by park guides. Park boats depart from Skradinski buk on a tour of about two hours with half an hour on the island, or make a stop at Visovac on the longer route to Roški slap. There are also boats from Roški slap and Stinice.
The park requests appropriate clothing to enter the monastery.
