Get to know the place

A region to enjoy
at your own pace.

Šibenik develops on terrain rising from the waterfront. The cathedral is the central visit in the old town, while fortresses in different positions help explain the relationship between the town, the hills and the channel. The route suggests alternating walks and rests rather than doing all the climbs at once.

St. Michael and Barone are land-based stages. St. Nicholas, beside the maritime access, has its own logistics and needs to be planned with the monument manager. The cathedral and the channel fortification are two World Heritage recognitions present in the region.

The Krka adds a day of scenery to the itinerary. At Skradinski buk, the visit follows paths and boardwalks between travertine barriers and mills.

Katedrala sv. Jakova
Šibenik · Šibenik-Knin · Cathedral

Katedrala sv. Jakova

The Katedrala sv. Jakova rises beside the square and the waterfront of Šibenik's historic center. The cathedral combines Gothic and Renaissance solutions in a stone construction. Its mass and dome appear from various points in the town, but the visit also calls for observing the facades up close.

Tvrđava sv. Mihovila
Šibenik · Šibenik-Knin · Fortress

Tvrđava sv. Mihovila

The Tvrđava sv. Mihovila sits on a rise above Šibenik's center. The fortress is linked to the formation of the urban core and offers a reading of the town from above. The contrast between the walls, roofs and the channel explains part of the visit's interest.

Tvrđava sv. Nikole
Šibenik · Šibenik-Knin · Fortress

Tvrđava sv. Nikole

The Tvrđava sv. Nikole sits by the entrance to the Sveti Ante (Santo António) channel, at Šibenik's maritime approach. Its position on the water and the design of the fortification set this complex apart from the hilltop fortresses of the city. It is a visit that requires its own logistics.

Tvrđava Barone
Šibenik · Šibenik-Knin · Fortress

Tvrđava Barone

The Tvrđava Barone sits on a hill in Šibenik and offers a different reading of the city's fortification system. The site faces the landward relief and the position of the urban core by the channel. The visit complements the São Miguel fortress without repeating the same siting.

Before you go

Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

May, June and September usually combine the town center and Krka with mild temperatures. July and August are hotter; in winter, from December to February, it rains more and the days are shorter.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

How many days to stay

Three days balance the town center, the fortresses and Krka. A fourth day allows reducing the climbs in each outing.

Which city to stay in

The old core suits those who want to walk to the cathedral, but there may be stairways accessing accommodation. The area near the bus station and the waterfront simplifies luggage and connections. Check the walking route before booking.

Respect the place

Take your trash with you, follow the signs and support local businesses. In natural areas, follow the visiting guidelines.
