About Whitehaven Beach

Whitehaven is the best-known beach in the Whitsundays. It lies on the east coast of Whitsunday Island, the largest island in the archipelago, inside the Whitsunday Islands National Park and the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage area. About 7 km of fine white sand, made up of 98% silica, reflects light and barely heats under the sun.

The island is traditional land of the Ngaro people. There are no buildings beyond park facilities such as restrooms, picnic tables, and a camping area.

From the southern end of the beach, a track climbs to a timber lookout with views to the north toward Hill Inlet, and continues along the top of the headland. The northern tip of the beach reaches the mouth of Hill Inlet, where sand and water form patterns that change with the tide.

Day boats depart from Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island, and some tours combine the beach with the Hill Inlet lookout. Seaplanes and helicopters land on the sand for scenic flights.
