About Heart Reef
The Heart Reef is a small heart-shaped coral formation within Hardy Reef, in the part of the Great Barrier Reef off the Whitsundays. It was first seen from the air in 1975 by a local pilot and became one of the country’s most iconic images.
The reef is a protected area: diving, snorkeling, and anchoring at Heart Reef are not allowed. The only way to see it is by plane, seaplane, or helicopter on scenic flights departing from Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island.
Flights usually also pass over Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet, the islands of the archipelago, and the channels of Hardy Reef. Some combine the flight with a day of snorkeling from platforms anchored in another part of Hardy Reef.
The heart is only a few meters across and shows best in sunny, clear-sea conditions.
