The city
Medieval hilltop town in the Gruyère region, in the southern part of the canton of Fribourg, which gave its name to the cheese. The main street, car-free, climbs up to the 13th-century castle of the Counts of Gruyère. The town houses the museum of artist HR Giger, and by the station in Pringy, the Maison du Gruyère shows how the cheese is made. The Moléson, at 2002 m, dominates the landscape. Gruyère is the land of crème double served with meringues.
