About Espace Jean Tinguely – Niki de Saint Phalle
The Espace Jean Tinguely – Niki de Saint Phalle occupies the old Fribourg tram depot, built in 1900. When the trams stopped running, the building had other uses until it was handed over by the city to house the museum.
The idea emerged after Jean Tinguely’s death in 1991. Niki de Saint Phalle, his wife, gifted the canton with monumental works created by the artist at the end of his life, and the space came to show the dialogue between the two artists’ works.
The highlight is the Retable de l'abondance occidentale et du mercantilisme totalitaire, a large machine by Tinguely from 1990, which visitors can operate by pedals. Niki de Saint Phalle’s colourful figures complete the exhibition.
The museum is administered by the Musée d'art et d'histoire de Fribourg and hosts temporary exhibitions related to the two artists and to contemporary art.
