The city
Bilingual capital of the canton of Fribourg, founded by the Zähringen on a bend of the Sarine River, where French and German meet. The Gothic Saint-Nicolas cathedral, with a 74 m tower and stained glass by Józef Mehoffer, dominates the medieval center that descends to the lower riverside quarters. The water-powered funicular from 1899 and the Espace Jean Tinguely – Niki de Saint Phalle complete the visit.
