About St. Nicholas Cathedral, Fribourg
The Cathedral of Saint-Nicolas is the symbol of Fribourg. Construction began in 1283 and was completed in 1490, and the church dominates the Bourg district on the hill above the Sarine. According to local tradition, the tower, at 74 m, was left without the planned spire because the money ran out.
The main portal has a bas-relief of the Last Judgment. Inside, the Gothic choir stalls, the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre and the large organ by Aloys Mooser draw attention.
The stained glass windows created by Józef Mehoffer between 1896 and 1936 form one of the most important Art Nouveau religious glass ensembles in Europe. There are also modern stained glass windows by Alfred Manessier.
From spring to autumn, a staircase of 365 steps leads to the top of the tower, with views over the old town, the bridges and the river meander.
