About Green Gate (Zelená brána)
The Zelená brána is what remains of the city fortifications raised by the Pernštejn family from 1507. It used to be called the Prague Gate because the road to the capital left from here; its current name came later, from the copper roof that turned green.
After the great fire of 1538, the tower was rebuilt and raised by about 13 meters, and around 1542 it received the roof shape it still has today. It measures about 59 meters. From the wooden gallery at the top, night watchmen used to watch over the city’s security.
On the outside, a relief designed by Mikoláš Aleš depicts the lords of Pardubice. On the other side of the tower begins Pernštýnské náměstí, the Renaissance square with the neo-Renaissance town hall and the U Jonáše house, whose façade features the relief of Jonah and the whale.
The ascent via the internal staircase leads to the gallery, from where you can see the square, the castle and the Elbe valley.
