About Boluminski Highway

The Boluminski Road runs along the east coast of New Ireland for about 293 km, from Kavieng in the north to Namatanai in the center of the island. It is named after Franz Boluminski, a German administrator from the early 20th century, and lies between the sea on one side and forest and coconut plantations on the other.

Much of the route is flat, which has made the road popular with cyclists. Along it you will find beaches, villages with churches and stilt houses, and freshwater bathing wells such as Fissoa, near the coast.

On the stretch south of Kavieng, the village of Laraibina receives visitors to see the sacred eels in a stream. Further inland, caves and waterfalls are visited with guides from the communities.

There are simple guesthouses in villages along the road, and operators in Kavieng arrange day tours or multi-day trips by car or bicycle.
