The region
Get to know Waikato
Waikato occupies the central-northern part of the North Island and is named after the Waikato River, New Zealand’s longest river, which flows from Lake Taupō to the Tasman Sea, south of Auckland. It is a region of pastureland and dairy farms, with Raglan’s surf coast to the west and the Coromandel Peninsula to the east. The capital is Hamilton.
Hamilton, the largest inland city in the country, is known for the Hamilton Gardens, a sequence of themed gardens on the riverbank. Near Matamata is Hobbiton, the Shire set from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films, preserved on a sheep farm and open on guided tours.
In Waitomo, limestone caves shelter colonies of glowworms (Arachnocampa luminosa), insect larvae found only in New Zealand whose lights carpet the cave ceilings. The Waitomo Glowworm Cave is visited on foot and by boat; other caves in the area offer tubing (black water rafting) and abseiling.
On the Coromandel Peninsula, the east coast features Hahei and Cathedral Cove, a rock arch between two beaches, and Hot Water Beach, where thermal water wells up under the sand and, near low tide, you can dig a hot pool. Whitianga, on Mercury Bay, is the region’s base, with boat trips to the Te Whanganui-A-Hei marine reserve.
To the south, Taupō sits on the shore of the country’s largest lake, formed in the caldera of a major ancient eruption. Near the town the Waikato River passes the Huka Falls, and the lake is the gateway to Tongariro National Park.
When to go
From December to March, warm weather favors Coromandel beaches, Lake Taupō and hiking. The Waitomo caves operate year‑round and are a good option on rainy days, which are more common from June to August. During the summer holidays, in December and January, Coromandel and Taupō get busy: book accommodation in advance.
Getting there
Hamilton is about 125 km south of Auckland, roughly a one-and-a-half-hour drive on SH1, and has an airport (HLZ) with domestic flights. From Hamilton, Matamata is about 60 km and Waitomo about 75 km. Whitianga is about 200 km from Auckland via Thames. Taupō has an airport (TUO) and is about 280 km from Auckland. Long‑distance buses link the towns; for Coromandel and Waitomo, a car gives more freedom.
Your questions
Frequently asked questions about Waikato
How to visit Hobbiton?
Hobbiton is only visited on a guided tour, with advance booking. Tours usually depart from the farm’s visitor center near Matamata, and there are tours with transport from Matamata, Rotorua and Auckland. The visit lasts about 2 hours.
How much time to allow for Waitomo?
The visit to the Waitomo Glowworm Cave takes under an hour; if you add another cave or a tubing descent you can spend the day. Waitomo lies on the route between Hamilton and Taupō or Rotorua, and many travelers stop there en route.
When to go to Hot Water Beach?
The hot water is only accessible near low tide, generally up to about two hours before and after it: check the tide table before you go. Shops near the beach rent shovels.
How to get to Cathedral Cove?
On foot, via the trail that starts at the top of Grange Road in Hahei, or by sea, by water taxi, kayak or boat. The trail can close after heavy rain: check conditions with the Department of Conservation (DOC) before you go.
