About Markt (Den Bosch Market Square)
The Markt is 's-Hertogenbosch’s central square, a triangle where the shopping streets of the historic center meet. Since the Middle Ages the city market was held there, and the square still hosts a market on some weekdays.
In the middle stands the statue of Jheronimus Bosch, the painter born in the city around 1450, who lived in one of the houses on the square. The Stadhuis, the town hall, has a 17th-century classical façade over an older building, and a carillon that plays from time to time.
In one corner of the square is De Moriaan, a brick house with a stepped façade, considered one of 's-Hertogenbosch’s oldest constructions, dating back to the 13th century. The narrow houses around the square house shops, cafés and terraces.
Streets leading to the cathedral, the Binnendieze boarding point and the museums start from the Markt.
