About Binnendieze (Den Bosch underground canals)
The Binnendieze is a network of canals that crosses the center of 's-Hertogenbosch, much of it beneath houses and streets. It began as branches of the Dommel River and was used for centuries for transport, sewage and defense. As the city grew, houses were built over the canals, and many sections were covered.
At its height the network reached about 22 km. Part was filled in during the 20th century, and the remainder was restored and reopened for tours. Today, low open boats take guided groups through open stretches and narrow tunnels, under bridges, cellars and gardens.
The route reveals the city’s hidden side: house foundations, old defensive walls and passages you can’t see from the street. The guide tells the history of each section.
Tours are paid separately, with limited departures and advance booking recommended, especially on weekends; check current rates and times. The boats are low: in some places you need to bend your head.
