About Museum Gouda

Museum Gouda is located behind the Sint-Janskerk, in a group of buildings that belonged to the former city hospital, the Sint-Catharinagasthuis. The best-known entrance is the Lazaruspoortje, a 17th-century stone portal that once led to the leper house and was moved here.

The collection tells Gouda’s story through paintings, silverware, furniture and everyday objects. An important part links the museum to the neighbouring church: the cartoons, full-size drawings that served as models for the Sint-Janskerk’s stained glass, have been shown there in past exhibitions.

The museum also displays the crafts that made Gouda famous beyond cheese, such as pottery and clay pipes, and hosts temporary exhibitions on art and history.

Admission is paid separately; check current prices. Located next to the church, a visit pairs well with seeing the stained glass at the same time.
