About De Roode Leeuw

De Roode Leeuw, the Red Lion, is a grain windmill built in 1727 on the site of an earlier mill, on the wall that once encircled Gouda. It stands on the edge of the Vest, the canal that marks the boundary of the historic center, a short walk from the Markt.

It is a stellingmolen (platform mill): the wooden gallery around the body allows the miller to reach the sails and turn the cap to face the wind. Restored in the 20th century, it returned to grinding grain and is one of the few remains of the cereal and flour trade that once existed in Gouda.

Since January 2025, the mill has stopped grinding grain and the shop has closed. The sails can still turn, but that does not mean there is milling or an interior visit.

Do not rely on regular internal openings; check with the person in charge about a possible scheduled visit before you go. From outside, the mill can be seen at any time beside the canal.
