About Îles du Frioul

The Îles du Frioul form an archipelago of four islands a few kilometers from the Vieux-Port: Pomègues, Ratonneau, If, where the château is located, and the islet Tiboulen. They total about 200 hectares and are part of Marseille's 7th arrondissement and the Parc national des Calanques.

Pomègues and Ratonneau are linked by the Digue de Berry, a causeway built in 1822, where the small harbor, a few restaurants and the houses of the few residents are located. The name comes from the Provençal "Frieu", which denotes the sea channel between two islands.

The landscape is dry, with light-colored rock and low vegetation, and coves of clear water. Marked trails lead to small beaches, like those on Ratonneau, and to old military batteries. On Ratonneau stands the Hôpital Caroline, a 19th-century former quarantine hospital.

There is almost no shade anywhere. It's an all-day outing, or a half-day if combined with the Château d'If, using the same boats that depart from the Vieux-Port.
