Calanque de Sormiou
One of the largest calanques of Marselha, within the Parc national des Calanques, with a sandy beach, a small harbour and fishermen's cabanons. It is the calanque with the easiest access from the city and a good first introduction to the calanques.

About Calanque de Sormiou
Calanque is the name given in Provence to a narrow, deep inlet cut between cliffs of white limestone, like a small fjord. Between Marselha and Cassis there are dozens of them, protected since 2012 by the Parc national des Calanques, the first national park in Europe that is at once terrestrial, marine and adjacent to a large city.
Sormiou is in the 9th district of Marselha, to the south of the city. It is one of the largest calanques, with a sandy beach, a small fishing harbour and a village of cabanons, the holiday huts of the locals. There are seafront restaurants.
You reach it by a trail from the park entrance, descending through the massif, or by a narrow road that goes down to the calanque. In high season, car access on that road can be controlled: check before you go.
From 1 June to 30 September access to the departmental massifs is regulated because of the risk of fire, and trails can be closed on high-risk days; the information is released the evening before. Bring water, sunscreen and closed shoes.
