About Saint‑Laurent Church of Cambo‑les‑Bains

The church of Saint Lawrence stands in Upper Cambo on a terrace above the Nive valley. It follows the model of Basque churches: a single nave, no columns, and wooden galleries in three levels along the walls. In local tradition, men occupied the galleries and women remained in the nave.

The highlight is the 17th‑century gilded wooden altarpiece behind the altar, with twisted columns, statues and a painting of the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence. The altarpiece is protected as a historic monument, and the whole church, with its external stairway and porch, was listed in 2015.

Around the church, the old cemetery preserves Basque disc steles, round headstones on a foot, with carved crosses and symbols. From the cemetery wall you can see the Nive valley and the Basque mountains.

The church is still used for worship and hosts Basque singing concerts throughout the year.
