About Mémorial de Caen (Caen Memorial)
The Memorial of Caen opened in 1988 in the north of the city, on the former headquarters of a German general in 1944. Caen was largely destroyed in the fighting of summer 1944 during the Battle of Normandy, and the city wanted a place dedicated to history and peace.
The main route begins in the years leading up to World War II and continues through the occupation, the global war and the Landing of June 6, 1944. One section covers the Battle of Normandy and the destruction of Caen. Another section is devoted to the Cold War, with objects and documents from both sides.
The museum uses films, objects, documents and reconstructions. Outside the building are memorial gardens dedicated to the Allied countries.
The Memorial also organizes excursions to the Landing beaches for those who want to complete the visit on site.
