About Church of St. Peter of Caen

The Church of Saint Peter sits in the heart of Caen, just below the castle, in a square crossed by the tram. It was built in stages from the 13th to the 16th century, with a Gothic nave and tower and a Renaissance choir.

The choir, made between 1518 and 1545 under Hector Sohier’s direction, is the best-known part. The chapels on the east side are covered with sculptures: candelabra, medallions and motifs inspired by Italy, a work that marks the arrival of the Renaissance in Normandy.

The tower, with its spire, was hit on June 6, 1944 during the fighting after the Landing and fell onto the nave. It was rebuilt in the 1950s, and the church underwent restorations in the following decades.

Inside, the high nave and vaults display Norman Gothic. On leaving, it’s worthwhile to walk around the church to see the choir up close.
