About Port-Musée de Douarnenez

Douarnenez’s port‑museum began as a collection gathered by an association in the 1970s and 1980s. The town turned the project into a site museum, opened in 1993, with two parts: an on‑land museum housed in a former cannery, and a harbor with boats moored in the Port‑Rhu estuary.

The on‑land museum brings together boats, models, tools and documents about fishing, coastal navigation and the canning industry that made Douarnenez prosperous in the early 20th century. The boats come from Brittany and other countries, showing very different construction and working techniques.

In the estuary, some moored vessels can be visited on board, from cargo holds to cabins. Restoration workshops work in public view, and the museum hosts temporary exhibitions on maritime cultures.

The floating boats close in winter for safety. The museum holds the Musée de France label.
